THE HISTORY OF PRINCETON CHEER

College cheerleading originated at Princeton University in the late 19th century, when the cheers of the first all-male pep club amped-up the football crowds. According to the Princetoniana, the term cheerleader was first used to describe the band of students that attended Princeton football games and practices shouting "Rah! Rah! Rah! S-s-s-t! Boom! A-h-h-h," in support of the mighty Tigers. This early chant formed part of the famous "Princeton Cheer," which has evolved into today's beloved Princeton "Locomotive." Known as one of the first cheerleaders, Thomas Peebles, Princeton Class of 1882, is credited with spreading cheerleading across different college campuses, sparking what is now known as organized cheer. Since the 1800s, we’ve remained a source of spirit and encouragement in the Princeton, New Jersey community. Our true love of the sport and dedication to our program makes Princeton cheer a family as much as it is a team.
